Why John Collins is the Perfect Fit for the Timberwolves but Likely Out of Reach (2026)

The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly interested in signing John Collins, a power forward who would be a perfect fit for their team. Collins, a nine-year veteran, has averaged 15.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while shooting 37% from three. However, the issue is that the Timberwolves's current salary cap situation makes it difficult to fit Collins into their financial picture. After trading for LaMelo Ball, the Wolves are projected to be over the first apron and without a ton of room under the second apron, which is a hard cap for them. The most they could offer Collins right now is $6.1 million via the taxpayer mid-level exception. Other interested teams, such as the Spurs, 76ers, and Magic, can offer more, so Collins would have to choose to take less to play in Minnesota. The Timberwolves could also try to create additional space by re-routing Josh Green's $14.7 million expiring deal, but they don't have even second-round picks to attach to Green's deal in order to move it. Additionally, the Wolves are not trading injured guard Donte DiVincenzo and his expiring $12.5 million deal. Unless Tim Connelly gets highly creative, Collins doesn't seem to be a realistic option for Minnesota. The Wolves may need to target lower-level options for frontcourt depth, either via free agency or the trade market. This situation highlights the challenges of building a competitive team within a tight salary cap environment. It's a reminder that sometimes, the perfect player for a team may not be the most affordable option. The Timberwolves will need to make some tough decisions and potentially get creative to build a winning team.
